Why did ACORN get thrown over the side so easily?

Something still doesn't add up on the Census Bureau's canning of ACORN. I know the undercover vids of those two shameless workers in the Baltimore office was the spark that ignited the volatile mixture, but I would have thought the entire liberal establishment would have erected the barricades and fought till the death to protect ACORN'S role in the census taking.
They would have screamed "entrapment", thrown down the race card, claimed it was an isolated incident and that the two workers involved were loose cannons. Anything but what happened. The Census Bureau's director, a Obama appointee, merely sent a letter to ACORN'S headquarters to inform them that they had become a "distraction" and that their dubious services were no longer needed.
We are, apparently, going to have a lawful, honest census, devoid of ACORN'S usual antics of registering Paul Newman, Mickey Mouse, Tony Roma, Eleanor Roosevelt, street lights, telephone polls and who knows what else.
I don't want to get giddy, but there are some nascent signs that some very limited forms of sanity are returning to America in the Fall of 2009. Here's hoping the trend continues.
