NY-9 is a body blow for the president. Democratic voter turnout was low for this special election, and given the organizational advantages Democrats have in both Queens and Brooklyn, this has to be making people nervous on President Obama’s team, and at the DCCC.

However, it shows a lack of understanding of the demographics of the Jewish population nationally, and in NY-9, to jump to the conclusion that Jewish voters do not support the president because of his views on Israel. It is outlandish to say that was the deciding factor in a downstream House special election, and as a democrat nothing would make me happier then to see Republicans invest time and money as a result.

The American Jewish community most people know and encounter is largely made up of secular, reform and conservative Jews whose ancestors immigrated to the United States between 1879-1924. That population has been a solid democratic voting block since the days of FDR. This was the historical Jewish community in NY-9, but there has been a major demographic shift in the district over the last two decades.

People like my grandmas (who both lived in NY-9), my parents (who were raised in NY-9), and myself (who was born in NY-9) mostly moved out of that district, starting in the 1970s and culminating with the passing of the older generation over the last decade. They were replaced by a massive wave of ex-Soviet Jews starting in the 1990s, a growing Orthodox population and a large group of Sephardic immigrants from the Middle East.

The ex-Soviet Jews and Orthodox Jews have been shown in many studies to be more supportive of republicans than democrats. For example, in 2004, Soviet Jews voted 75 percent for Bush. Orthodox Jews voted 78 percent for McCain in 2008. Given those numbers, it was only a matter of time before this district became Republican, and it is a testament to Anthony Weiner for keeping it Democratic as the demographics of the district continued to shift over the last decade.
