Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) is getting additional security after a tea party-affiliated activist backing one of her GOP opponents publicly declared that they “have to kill the Claire Bear.”
The U.S. Capitol Police contacted local police in Kirkwood, Mo., and asked them to step up patrols near McCaskill’s home. McCaskill also has more personal security present at her campaign and official events, sources said.
The beefed-up security comes after Scott Boston, a conservative activist, told a tea party event last Thursday that McCaskill was an “evil monster” and needed to be removed from office, according to a transcript of his comments.
Boston was speaking a Tea Party Express event. That group is endorsing Sarah Steelman, who is vying for the GOP senatorial nomination to take on McCaskill in the fall.
“We have to get Claire McCaskill out,” Boston said, according to the audio recording of the event. “We have to kill the Claire Bear, ladies and gentlemen.”
Boston added: “She walks around like she’s some sort of Rainbow Brite Care Bear or something, but really she’s an evil monster.”
Missouri Democrats called on all three of McCaskill’s potential challengers to repudiate Boston’s comments.
