REDLANDS - Dee Barrow waved to drivers from a lawnchair on San Mateo Street. Some honked or called in support.
“We can’t be in D.C. but we wanted to do something,” said Barrow, who lives in Upland. She wore an American flag baseball cap, earrings and necklace, and attached a flag to her chair.
She and several others stood at San Mateo and Brookside Avenue with flags and signs Friday afternoon. They asked passers-by to sign a petition asking Rep. Jerry Lewis to support HR 1026, legislation that would crack down on illegal immigration.
“We want them to know we’re not just sitting here waiting for them to pass a bill,” Barrow said.
The group brought the petition to Lewis’s Brookside Avenue office later Friday. About 100 signatures were collected, organizer Raymond Herrera said Saturday. He said Lewis’s staff said they would give him the petition, and he planned to call Lewis at his Washington office Saturday.
“What we’re asking is for Congressman Jerry Lewis to stand with his constituents,” said Herrera, founder of We the People, California’s Crusader, a Claremont-based grassroots group that organized the demonstration.
“The congressman always welcomes hearing from his constituents on any issue,” Jim Specht, Lewis’s deputy chief of staff, wrote in an e-mail from Washington, D.C.
“Congressman Lewis is opposed to considering legislation that would grant amnesty or other legalization of illegal immigrants at this time because Congress has not addressed the need to secure the border and to develop systems that will stop illegal immigration in the future,” he wrote.
“However, he has never been a supporter of Congress passing legislation that tells Congress what it can’t do.”
The resolution currently has 57 supporters and needs more than 200 by June to be voted on, Herrera said. It would require businesses to enforce immigration law, make E-Verify mandatory, strengthen border security and offer no amnesty to illegal immigrants.
E-Verify is an Internet-based system that allows an employer to see if an employee is eligible to work in the United States.
Herrera said the group is giving Lewis 30 days to support the resolution.
“If he doesn’t sign we’ll pass out fliers to his constituents in supermarkets and parks,” he said.
If Lewis does not support it, he will not receive votes in November, Herrera said.
“The American people want deportation, so there is no compromise on this,” he said.
The group will also “demand” President Obama enforce the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, he said. The law requires “legalization of undocumented aliens who had been continuously unlawfully present since 1982, legalization of certain agricultural workers, sanctions for employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers, and increased enforcement at U.S. borders,” according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Demonstration organizer Robin Hvidston said the group was receiving positive responses from passers-by. Many who stopped signed the petition.
“We are thinking as many as 70 percent of his constituents want him to sign this bill,” Hvidston said.
Volunteers came and went, most holding signs that said “Hire Americans,” “Stop Illegal Immigration” and “Support American Workers.”
“We love our country and don’t want to see it go down,” said volunteer Don Schenck of Corona.
Herrera led an immigration reform demonstration at Lewis’s office in June. He said We the People held demonstrations Friday in Arizona, New Jersey and Illinois, and all members of Congress will be asked to support the legislation.
HR 1026 was introduced Jan. 21 by Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican.
Specht said Lewis is co-sponsoring HR 19, which would expand the E-Verify program and make it mandatory. He supported Rep. Ken Calvert’s effort last year to attach that legislation to the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill. The bill did not pass.
Specht said Lewis worked with former Rep. Duncan Hunter to pass the Secure Fence Act in 2006 by accepting it as an amendment to the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill. Lewis has supported $1.2 billion in spending in appropriations bills to build at least 700 miles of the fence, Specht wrote.

Illegal aliens are destroying this Country, and one would have to be almost blind not to see this. How much longer do we have to support these illegal aliens? How much longer do we have to school their illegal alien children? How much longer are we going to let them have our jobs? How much longer are we going to put up with all the crime, stolen identities, forged documents, fake green cards? How much longer are we going to allow these illegal aliens to send money out of this Country and bring our Country down? Oh, amnesty will correct all this. WRONG! Nothing will change except we wouldn’t be able to call them illegal aliens any more. Let’s get rid of these illegal aliens! Let’s get them back to their own Country where they belong!
Let’s get the law pased!
I’m from Delaware, and we are pressing to get the Oklahoma State Illegal Immigration Law, HB 1804. passed here in Delaware. Three years ago we had about 32,000 illegal aliens here. Today we have about 68,000 illegal aliens here. We have had it! We want our State back!
Delaware Bob,
Couldn’t agree more. It is nothing short of amazing how a country as broke as we are will continue to allow itself to bleed to death, financially speaking.
It’s time we enforced the law, end the “free” lunch and recover our national sanity.
Politicians have a habit of bypassing the law that is firmly in place, if its not beneficial to those who insure their large campaign contributions or some other method of secret payment. Rep. Gabrielle Gifford (D-AZ) is obviously trying to uproot E-Verify with yet another program called NEVA. We must not get distracted by some other illegal alien enforcement, as in the future it to will be impaired by another program and another. Then–NOTHING–gets done. Homeland Security and ICE should work with what has progressed and that is E-verify. Critics are brought and paid for, by the opponents of any enforcement project. Likewise an example will be pharmaceutical companies who pay specialists to offer astounding testament of some wonderful drug, only to find later its has terrible side effects. Everything has its price specially in this capitalist society, where the ordinary working man and womens interests come last.
You only have to look at the wilting Health Care reform? Bombarded as we are by negative advertising. France, a socialist republic has a wonderful health care system and relatives of mine who live there will heartily agree of it great benefits. In America GIANT INSURANCE COMPANIES, AND WALL STREET ARE KING. Anybody can be brought in many cases, just as companies who have been intimidated or the psychological approach of imprinting regular people with some form of indoctrinations. Far as many bloggers are concerned, hundreds of rural and independent newspapers acknowledge E-Verify works? WE THE PATRIOTIC AMERICAN PEOPLE MUST NOT LET THE CRITICS OR THE WIDE OPEN BORDER ORGANIZATIONS, TRY TO ADJUST YOUR OPINION OF E-VERIFY. SOON DOCUMENT FRAUD WILL BE A THING OF THE PAST. DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT E-VERIFY IS GOING TO REMAIN IN STASIS? MANY NEW TOOLS ARE GOING TO BE ADDED AND ILLEGAL WORKERS WILL BE REMOVED BY ATTRITION.
A comment from a business human resources states:
Comment:
“I have used E-Verify for several years, and only once have I encountered this event, and it was quickly resolved due to the person whose identity was stolen stepping forward to correct earnings report errors. E-Verify works better than any other mechanism available. Opponents are still striving to discredit its value and accuracy. For identity theft to get past E-Verify, it has to involve a complete theft. (Name, DOB and SSN) Just getting a name and SSN will not suffice. I would gladly welcome a requirement for photo match,(which is being introduced shortly) which already happens for non-citizens using an immigration card or passport as their submitted documents. As an employer, if E-Verify has no other value, it provides the presumption of not “knowingly” employing an illegal, which is a priceless protection for employers.”
Illegal immigration is–EVERY AMERICAN WORKERS–responsibility and we should keep up a repetitious bombardment on every state and federal Senator and Representative at 202-224-3121 to enforce every law. IT IS OUR DUTY TO REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY AT YOUR WORK PLACE OR ANYTHING YOU SEE AND HEAR. 15 million US citizens and legal residents are jobless, with low income workers mainly at risk. The Internet is convinced their are 8 million illegal workers who have taken the the jobs of the legitimate workforce. EVEN SO THESE PEOPLE BROKE THE LAW AND ITS OUR OBLIGATION AND RIGHT TO REMOVE THEM.Other statistics indicate Washington is still importing a million plus semi-skilled workers yearly.
In addition Border patrol has chillingly estimated that only 1 in 10 illegal entrants gets caught at the border. THIS CONCLUSION OF 20 TO 30 MILLION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT FAMILIES HAVE SETTLED HERE AND IT IS AN ONGOING RISK TO OUR WELFARE ENTITLEMENT SYSTEM. We cannot afford to regress on E-Verify or any other enforcement program such as 287 (g) local police alien detainment, ICE raids and the REAL ID and SAVE ACT. We must also impose restrictions on this demented Birthright citizen law?
Don’t be sidetracked by Sen.Harry Reid, Speaker Pelosi, Sen. Chuck Schumer and other equally insistent on another Comprehensive Immigration reform. ITS JUST ANOTHER WAY OF UNDERHANDINGLY SANITIZING ANOTHER AMNESTY, WHERE AMERICANS WILL BE EVEN MORE EXPECTED TO SUPPORT UNCOUNTABLE NUMBERS OF NEWLY LEGITIMIZED IMMIGRANTS. It’s almost unobtainable now with all states, but border states like Sanctuary California and even Texas and Arizona in a wretched financial positions pandering to illegal immigrants in hundreds of billions of dollars in welfare. E-Verify must be guaranteed to be improved, permanent and completely funded. Years of neglect by politicians has caused this terrible situation, with a poorly built border fence, easy movement of people who have overstayed US entry visas.
Our nation is being invaded and colonized. As is our duty, We the People will resist.
