Also, the angle of bowing and the relative depth of the bow show the relative status between the two people. So in this picture the Emperor is probably feeling rather awkward as the Head of the United States not only suddenly bows while shaking his hand, but also goes down at a deep angle showing much relative subservience. Also note that the Emperor is trying to look into Obama’s face but Obama is too busy staring at the floor to look back….another sign that Obama views the other man as being of much higher status.
